Conclusion

While the Samsung U28E590D was one of the cheapest 4K monitors available back in the day, there are simply much better options out there for the same price nowadays.

Image Quality

First of all, the Samsung U28E590D monitor features a TN panel, which in comparison to IPS and VA panels, delivers an inferior image quality due to its narrow viewing angles and bad color reproduction.

So, don’t expect particularly rich and vivid colors.

The 4K resolution, however, will ensure that the image is sharp and crisp with maximum details and plenty of screen space.

For PC use, keep in mind that the monitor will require scaling due to its high pixel density, and some applications don’t scale all that well. We can’t really blame the Samsung U28E590D monitor for this as certain apps are simply poorly-optimized.

Besides support for 10-bit color depth via dithering (8-bit + FRC) and 4K resolution, the Samsung U28E590D display boasts a peak luminance of 370-nits, which will ensure that the picture is bright even in well-lit rooms.

The viewing angles of 160° vertically and 170° horizontally will cause the picture to shift in color/contrast when looking at it from skewed angles, which is an expected drawback of TN panels.

Performance

The Samsung U28E590D utilises AMD’s FreeSync technology so ideally you’ll be matching this up to a modern AMD graphics card. You’ll need a decent high end GPU to get the best out of a 4k screen – that’s a lot of pixels you’ve got to push round the screen! FreeSync is designed to give you smooth tear free gaming by synchronising the frame rate of your monitor to the frames output by your graphics card.

The display scores well in colour reproduction showing excellent results in both the sRGB and AdobeRGB color gamut ranges. But do note this is a TN based screen which means the colour accuracy distorts when viewed from obscure angles. Samsung have done what they can to minimise this problem but it is still there. But remember, the TN panel does keep the cost of this monitor down so it is a compromise worth making if you don’t want to break the bank.

The Samsung U28E590D is a mediocre monitor for mixed usage. The lackluster picture quality and very narrow viewing angle mean its performance is below average on a few basic elements for a good monitor. Its higher resolution and larger size are otherwise good features. Its stand is also less than stellar, offering very few adjustments.

Differences Between Sizes And Variants

В девайсе используется матрица типа TN. Размер экрана 28 дюймов, а его разрешение до 3840×2160 пикселей (Ultra HD 4K). При этом плотность пикселей довольно высокая – 151,35 точек на дюйм.

Естественно, для запуска современной игры в таком разрешении потребуется мощная видеокарта (а возможно и пара, работающая с использованием технологии SLI или Crossfire).

Не рекомендуется использовать такой монитор, если у вас на компьютере установлена Windows 8 – у этой ОС дела с масштабированием изображения обстоят не лучшим образом. Впрочем, Винду всегда можно переустановить, использовав «Семерку» или «Десятку».

Цветопередача устройства на высоком уровне – матрица может обрабатывать более 1 млн. цветов, при этом картинка яркая и сочная, чем не всегда могут похвастаться TN-матрицы.

Яркость изображения 370 кд/м2, что даже немного больше рекомендованного для игр значения. Статическая контрастность 1000:1. Это норма для современных мониторов, за исключением матриц типа TN: для них это завышенный показатель.

К слову, сегодня покупка такого монитора обойдется от 15 000 рублей, и жалеть вы точно не будете. За эти же деньги можно взять монитор с разрешением 27 дюймов с матрицей IPS, однако для игр такое устройство не совсем подходит из-за более высокого времени отклика матрицы.

Build Quality

Samsung do a good job of creating good looking displays and the U28E590D is no exception. Given that many of the early 4k monitors are distinctly unattractive this goes a long way in it’s favour. Looks are always subjective but I think this is a smart looking screen with minimalist features, cool lines and a fairly thin bezel to frame your display. This is a screen that will look good in a casual or professional setting.

Connectivity includes both DisplayPort 1.2 and the modern HDMI 2.0 standard. Either will be able to support 4k gaming at 60hz. There are no USB ports so if that’s important to you then you’ll have to be willing to do without – I think most of us can live without!

The display features a matt display, this helps to reduce glare and seems preferential to me although some people prefer a glossy look on their screen.

Само покрытие экрана матовое, что даст дополнительную страховку от бликов света – например, попавших в комнату солнечных лучей или неправильно установленного освещения.

На торцах нет никаких разъемов и элементов управления: все они спрятаны на тыльной панели. Кнопка для включения питания расположена в правом нижнем углу, если смотреть прямо на экран.

Благодаря специфической форме ее легко нащупать. Эта кнопка совмещена с пятипозиционным джойстиком, с помощью которого легко управлять всеми функциями устройства.Разъемы подключения мониторов и питания расположены приблизительно по центру на тыльной стороне экрана. Здесь есть пара портов HDMI, Display Port, USB, гнездо для подключения наушников – джек 3.5 мм, а также небольшой слот для подключения внешнего блока питания.

В самой толстой части толщина изделия 65 мм – весьма компактно как для таких широких возможностей. Устройство выполнено в строго черном цвете. К сожалению, с момента выпуска это пока единственно цветовое решение – модификации белого цвета не выпускаются.

Форма поставки не позволяет поворачивать экран по вертикальной оси. Экран наклоняется вверх и вниз в угол до 15 градусов. Замки для крепления замков VESA отсутствуют, поэтому повесить такой монитор на стенку не получится. Зато на столе девайс стоит плотно, как влитой, и не шатается при прикосновении.

Дизайн у U28D590D довольно футуристический, как и положено пришельцу из ближайшего будущего. Тонкий экран с тонкой рамкой как будто парит над столом на тонкой подставке в виде Т-образной металлической полосы, покрытой серебристым пластиком. И это неплохо контрастирует с чёрной рамкой вокруг экрана, но здесь отдана дань не дизайну, а эргономике: изображение в серебристой рамке выглядело бы менее контрастно, и приводило бы к излишнему напряжению глаз. Несмотря на «воздушность», подставка довольно жёсткая, способная дать фору в прочности даже более массивным вариантам. Раскачиваться, как лист на ветру, от лёгкого толчка монитор не станет. Более того, она вообще не имеет степеней свободы, даже наклона вперёд-назад, присутствующего практически у каждой из других моделей. Решение спорное: с одной стороны, оно позволяет уменьшить размеры подставки при сохранении устойчивости, а с другой, не так уж мало людей любят наклонять экран при работе, а здесь это становится невозможным.

Приятное удивление вызывает качество разъёма, соединяющего блок с монитором: хоть он и напоминает своим видом подобные хлипкие коннекторы с кольцевым контактом и штырьком внутри, где соединение может пропасть лишь при неосторожном движении провода с разъёмом, здесь при аналогичной конструкции фиксация производится с усилием и очень надёжна: случайно провод не выпадет

Остальные разъёмы, в число которых входит пара входов HDMI и один DisplayPort, расположены, как водится, в нише посередине задней стенки. Вот только направлены они не вниз, как кажется логичнее, а назад – то есть, воткнутые кабели торчат из них перпендикулярно стенке. За это можно было бы пожурить конструкторов-разработчиков, но это создало бы проблему при настенном креплении, а здесь такой вариант не предусмотрен, так что проблем нет. Отметим, что популярные мультимедийные опции, такие как динамики или TV-тюнер, здесь отсутствуют – перед нами «чистый» монитор. Нет также и портов расширения USB. В целом девайс выглядит аккуратно, пластик качественный, детали подогнаны ровно. Такой облик хорошо впишется и в домашнюю обстановку, и в интерьер офиса.

Performance

One of the main things to keep in mind about the Samsung U28E590D is that it doesn’t support HDCP 2.2, meaning that you will not be able to watch HDCP2.2-protected content in 4K on Blu-rays and certain streaming services such as Amazon Video and Netflix.

The monitor does support HDCP 1.4, which means that the protected 4K content can be played, but at 1080p max. PC and console games, as well as other apps will run at 4K without any issues, though.

Moving on, while TN panels have the worst viewing angles and colors, they do have the fastest response time speed of only 1ms.

This will remove most of ghosting or trailing behind fast-moving objects in fast-paced games, thus providing you with buttery-smooth motion clarity.

The image straight out of the box is a bit underwhelming, but after some quick calibration, it gets notably better.

Finally, the Samsung U28E590D input lag performance is very good and amounts to ~9ms.

Compared To Other Monitors

The Samsung U28E590 is a decent monitor, but it comes with quite a few major trade-offs that often make it a less desirable choice over its competition. It is, however, a bit cheaper than average. BenQ EL2870U

The BenQ EL2870U is much better than the Samsung UE590. The BenQ supports HDR, although this doesn’t add much. The BenQ also has slightly better motion handling, as the backlight is completely flicker-free at all brightness settings. Although both monitors support FreeSync, the BenQ supports it over DisplayPort and HDMI, whereas the Samsung only supports FreeSync over DisplayPort.

The LG 27UD58-B is much better than the Samsung UE590. The LG 27UD58-B has much wider viewing angles, and there are no duplications in moving objects as the backlight is flicker-free. The 27UD58 has better gray uniformity, which is great for watching streaming sports.

The Samsung U32J590 is better than the UE590. The newer U32J590 has a much better native contrast ratio, thanks to the VA panel. It also has better viewing angles, and much better Adobe RGB color volume. The older UE590 is a lot brighter.

The Samsung JG50 is a bit better than the Samsung UE590, although they use different panel technologies, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. The UE590 has a TN panel, with a 4k resolution, great for multitasking. The JG50 uses a VA panel, which delivers much deeper blacks. The JG50 has a lower native resolution, but has a much faster refresh rate and has less input lag.

LG 32QN55T-B

The LG 32QN55T-B is much better than the Samsung UE590 for most users. The LG has much better viewing angles, so the image remains accurate at the sides and if you’re sharing your screen with someone else. The LG also has better accuracy out of the box, supports HDR, and has a flicker-free backlight. On the other hand, the Samsung monitor has a much higher pixel density, resulting in sharper images and much better text clarity.

The Dell U2715H is much better than the Samsung UE590. The U2715H has much better viewing angles and better ergonomics, so it can easily be adjusted to the best position and readjusted if there are multiple users. The Dell is better for people sensitive to flicker, as it is flicker-free. The Samsung UE590 is a bit better for gaming, as it has a faster refresh rate with FreeSync support and higher native resolution.

The Dell U2717D is much better than the Samsung UE590. The U2717D has much better ergonomics, so it is easier to adjust to a more comfortable viewing position. The Dell has much wider viewing angles, and better gray uniformity. The Samsung UE590 is better for gamers, as it has much lower input lag and a faster refresh rate, so fast moving objects have less motion blur.

LG 27UD68-B

The LG 27UD68P-B is significantly better than the Samsung UE590. The LG 27UD68P-B uses an IPS panel which has much wider viewing angles. The LG has better ergonomics, as the stand height can be adjusted and it can switch between portrait and landscape orientations. The LG is flicker-free, whereas the Samsung UE590 flickers at lower brightness levels, which causes duplications in motion.

Features

Although the Samsung U28E590D supports AMD FreeSync, it doesn’t work over HDMI, only over DisplayPort. So, if you have an Xbox One console, you won’t be able to utilize the monitor’s variable refresh rate.

On the other hand, if you have a FreeSync-compatible graphics card, you can synchronize the Samsung U28E590D refresh rate with the GPU’s frame rate and thus eliminate screen tearing and stuttering.

Other features include Picture in Picture and Picture by Picture as well as Game Mode, which increases visibility in dark parts of games by altering the gamma curvature.

The monitor is also flicker-free and has an Eye Saver mode, which filters out the harmful blue-lights so you can work or play for hours without straining your eyes.

Измеренные нами параметры экрана слегка разочаровали. Яркость подсветки и статическая контрастность оказались несколько меньше заявленных, но, впрочем, выше подавляющего большинства недорогих моделей. Как выяснилось, параметры яркости зависят и от режима автоматической обработки изображения, выставленной в меню U28D590D, включающем оптимизацию картинки для офисной работы, игр, либо просмотра фильмов. Не исключено, что при определённом сочетании параметров заявленные цифры удастся-таки получить. Динамический контраст, заявленный как «бесконечность» (что в некотором смысле логично, ведь при полностью выключенной подсветке яркость экрана стремится к нулю), бывает полезен лишь в ограниченных случаях, поскольку светодиодная подсветка экрана здесь не секционная, а краевая. Также на чёрном фоне заметно некоторое «протекание» подсветки по краям, хотя мы думаем, что этот эффект будет варьироваться от экземпляра к экземпляру, так как зависит от качества сборки.

Что же касается качества цветопередачи, то отклонение от эталона по стандарту CIE 2000 составило около 14%, а цветовой охват sRGB – 87%. Это заметно превосходит большинство офисных дисплеев, имеющих яркость не более 300 кд/м² и охват 70-80%, но в то же время не дотягивает до уровня профессиональных. Зачем в такой ситуации 10-битный цвет – вопрос открытый, так как в нашем случае разницы по сравнению с 8 битами заметно не будет. Может быть, что без такого повышения качества контроллера матрицы не удалось бы реализовать упомянутую функцию MagicAngle, а может, разработчики решили таким образом «выжать» из неё максимум возможного?

Так или иначе, но любое улучшение можно только приветствовать, если оно не поднимает цену до заоблачных высот. Но здесь, как мы видим, цена вполне демократична. Конечно, 25 тыс. «деревянных» превышает среднюю стоимость дисплея сопоставимой диагонали с разрешением Full HD, но заметно ниже других Ultra HD мониторов, а также телевизоров формата 4k, являющихся единственной альтернативой нашему девайсу. Жаль, что производитель использовал недорогую технологию матрицы и «жёсткую» подставку без регулировок, но зато он попытался скомпенсировать это некоторыми новыми функциями. Поэтому можно сказать, что такой компромисс между ценой и возможностями ставит U28D590D в практически не занятую «бюджетную» нишу нового класса устройств ультравысокой чёткости.

И если дальше технологии будут развиваться подобным образом, то совсем скоро устройства 4k, а может быть, даже 8k – дальнейшего улучшения стандарта, станут для нас с вами такими же привычными, как Full HD. Поживём – увидим!
